Weekend Reading, Feb 20 15

This week, I compiled a short Lenten list for Weekend Reading - sites I visit and that always leave me feeling nourished or convicted or thoughtful.

Ann Voskamp writes a compelling Call for the Next 40 Days: To the Nations and People of the Cross. Ann calls us to examine our place in this broken world, and to examine the Cross' place in this broken world. A must-read.

Catholic Relief Services has an app! They also have a great selection of videos that explain what Lent really is.  One year - many years ago - my mom encouraged us to do extra chores during Lent, and the money we earned would be placed in our CRS Rice Bowl. We were so excited to see how the money added up - and its a wonderful way for children to learn to ACT for the Body of Christ (as opposed to resenting giving up candy)!

Father Robert Barron shares daily inspiration with his Word on Fire program - sign up for free daily Lent emails in English or Spanish. Father Barron calls us to return to the basics, and fires me up with his emails.

And this is where you can Pope Francis' message to the faithful for Lent 2015 - an inspiring message of Holy Love overcoming Worldly Indifference. Many media outlets intentionally misrepresent the Pope - weaving their own narrative into their translations of his words - so I prefer to go to the source, which is often far more inspiring!

I hope you are as inspired as I was from these stories. Have a prayerful and fruitful weekend!

Weekend Reading June 22 '14

This has been a hectic weekend - my wee nieces had a class party at their home for their friends on Friday, then we had "girl night" which consisted of a little barbeque, painting a sticky solution on 2 nearby trees in the hopes of attracting interesting moths and bugs in the deep of the night, many trips outside with flashlight in the deep of the night to look at same bugs, and a Dr Who marathon. Saturday, the girls (ages 8 and 10) each cooked their own eggs and helped make breakfast in bed for their parents - and then I headed to my parent's house for some intensive garden work with my youngest brother. Dad has been in hospital (nothing too serious) so I also did a few loads of laundry and some general household tidying so Mom wouldn't be burdened. Today - Sunday - I caught up on my Bible reading, and visited these lovely places before heading out for a long visit with Dad:

Melissa at The Inspired Room always has something lovely to share - my favorite today is her post on 5 Minute Baking Drawer Organisation (Using What You Have). She
inspired me to rethink my kitchen storage - no reason things cannot be both pretty and organised - and I love love LOVE that she repurposes *what she already has* in her home to achieve this!

I discovered this lovely blog, Grandma Lessons: A Grandmother's Blog on Life, written by Grandma Mema.

I enjoyed Rebecca's breathtakingly lovely nature photos and a slice of life in her Morning Chores post on the homestead at Renaissance.

What are you reading this weekend?

Weekend Reading: Mar 14 '14

It is Friday...and it is Lent...last week, I cheated and bought pre-breaded flounder fillets at the fishmonger. Today, we are having pasta for dinner and had tuna for lunch. We eat a lot of fish during Lent, so for this Weekend Reading post I was inspired to create a Fish on Friday weekend reading list. Enjoy!

The Kitchn has a whole slew of Lenten seafood recipes here.

Rachael Ray has a page that shares the meaning of Lent and shares seafood and meatless recipes here.

Jamie Oliver's Salmon Cakes are healthy, delicious and can be a very frugal choice!

And Martha Stewart's Lemon-Parsley Fish Cakes are another healthy, delicious, and suprisingly frugal dish! I like to make the fishcakes in large batched, and then freeze for evenings when I will be too busy to cook something nice!

Weekend Reading, Feb 7 '14

More snow (yes...more!!!) predicted for this weekend! I guess is will cover up the foot or so of ice-encrusted frozen white stuff already on the ground...eek!

Ah well, as long as it doesn't interfere with my plans to attend a local celebration of the Beatles on Saturday night...

When I'm not dancing around singing "Love me Do" this is what I'll be reading:

Ashley at Make It & Love It posted a recipe for Chocolate Cracker Toffee...and yes, I'm making it...cos...calories do not count when the thermometer reads below 20, right?

I'll be downloading a Paper Daisies Pattern from Kate's Paperie (swoon) and contemplating actually making them.

I'll catch up with an old favorite, Pamela at From the House of Edward.

And I'll visit a new-to-me blog, The Enchanted Home.

Weekend Reading: Jan 31 '14

It is still very cold and snow-covered here...so I look forward to snuggling up with some weekend reading:

I'll be reading an update from The Nester's trip to Uganda with Compassion...and wiping tears from my eyes...

http://www.thenester.com/2014/01/dear-fellow-sponsors-all-over-the-world.html

I'm going to learn how to regrow some common kitchen items at WonderHowTo. I've done basil and celery...had NO idea about mushrooms...

I'm going to read up on making a (gulp!) Double Pinwheel Quilt at HGTV.

And, since I am working on a Black History bookazine, I will be reading up on the events of 1964...Freedom Summer!

Weekend Reading Dec 6 '13

I hope you enjoy this week's Weekend Reading round-up! I plan to spend my weekend babysitting wee nieces, playing with my newborn grandson (our Thanskgiving baby!), and catching up on all sorts of domestic chores that didn't happen when grandbaby arrived (smile)!

I think I will try this simple pipe-cleaner snowflake craft from Martha Stewart with the wee nieces!

Erica at Confessions of a Homeschooler posted a classic tutorial for making beaded snowflake ornaments here.

First Palette has lovely paper snowflake folding and cutting templates here.

And Spoonful has a lovely 3D paper snowflake template here...I have to say, I think I am going to try it this year!

Weekend Reading, Nov 15 '13

I hope you enjoy this week's Weekend Reading round-up! I plan to spend my weekend nesting a bit more - in preparation for grandbaby-to-be and the holidays...so the weekend will include a lot of knitting and quilting along with the normal cleaning and cookery chores!

Meredith from Like Merchant Ships is in "semi-retirement" mode at the moment, but her blog is packed with beautiful, frugal ideas - and lovely inspiration photos. This post from 2007, on creating a Thanksgiving Centerpiece, is always timely!

Deep Roots at Home has a lovely fall decorating post using natural element here, Jacqueline's photos are stunning and the crafts ideas are do-able and run from sweet to glam.

A wee craft tutorial here, from five brothers one sister - how to make a Spice Angel from a clothes peg, cinnamon stick and bay leaves!

http://fivebrothersonesister.blogspot.com.au/2010/12/spice-angel-tutorial.html

Rhonda of Down to Earth wrote a fabulous and inspiring post on the work of a homemaker here.

An absolutely beautiful embroidery site here - Tracey Franklin is a specialty embroiderer, and her work is stunning...you must see it to believe it!
