Goodnight, Ark, by Laura Sassi - Book Review

Goodnight, Ark by Laura Sassi is a fun and fanciful tale - animals on the ark are too frightened by the storm to sleep, so - like our children - they climb into Noah's bed for comfort. Until Noah's bed breaks under the weight - elephants will do that. Kindly Noah then sings the animals a lullaby to comfort and soothe them to sleep - and peace reigns for the night.

Beds are ready. Food is stored. Noah hollers, “All aboard!”

 – Goodnight, Ark
This is not a classic ark tale - but rather one incident on one night on the ark, and a great leaping off point for later discussions about what it must have been like to be on the ark when the floods came.

The little ones I read this to sympathized with the frightened animals, and were delighted to think of tigers and snakes also being frightened of thunder. Laura Sassi's rhymes made for a fun and engaging read-along session, and while the story is simple it felt satisfying to my young wee niece readers.

Jane Chapman's illustrations are fun and colorful and playful - the animals are expressive and imaginatively drawn, and silly in the best possible way.

This is a lovely bedtime story, especially for little ones who may have trouble with storms. The story and the art work together to create a magical reading experience.

Goodnight, Ark is Laura Sassi's first picture book - but her work has appeared in children's publications like Ladybug, Highlights for Children, Spider, and more. Sassi's follow-up title - Goodnight, Manger - is already in the works!
Jane Chapman has been illustrating children's books for almost twenty years. Her titles include Bear Says Thanks, Bear 's Loose Tooth, Bear Sees Colors, The Magical Snow Garden and many more.

Goodnight, Ark is published by Zondervan/Zonderkidz. It can be purchased for $15.99 directly from Zondervan, or at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or other fine booksellers.
